Five Past Midnight in Bhopal: The Epic Story of the World's Deadliest Industrial Disaster - Dominique Lapierre, Javier Moro This is a very interesting book, highlighting a culture a lot of Americans might not be familiar with, along with a detailed history of what is currently the world's greatest industrial disaster. There is loads of culpability to go around, but this book is primarily a look at the lives of the people on both sides of the disaster, both before and after the gas leak that killed over 8,000 people. The author uses a prosaic style, writing it like a novel with a lot of exposition. The last third of the book, detailing the actual event, would make a great science fiction film, if it wasn't so poignantly and pitifully real. The real tragedy here is seeing what a low price everyone seems to put on human life if said humans aren't in a developed country. The India in shown in this book, just thirty years ago, was a rather medieval place, with the trappings of modern civilization as only window dressing. Of course, it is quite easy to see modern America descending to this level in the near-future...
